The best rum distilleries to visit in Puerto Rico

Take a trip to a rum distillery in Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico and rum are inseparable. Known as the Rum Capital of the World, the islands have a rum-making tradition stretching back centuries, rooted in the archipelago’s colonial history, sugarcane cultivation and the Caribbean climate. Sugarcane once shaped the territory’s economy, while generations of local producers developed distinctive techniques for fermenting, distilling and aging rum. Today, rum is more than a drink: it is a symbol of Puerto Rican identity, hospitality and celebration, enjoyed in everything from the classic piña colada to family gatherings and festive occasions. It’s big business too. Around 80% of the rum consumed in the United States is from Puerto Rico and its rum is exported to every corner of the globe.

Visiting a rum distillery offers a fascinating way to discover this heritage firsthand. From internationally renowned producers to small-batch specialists, Puerto Rico has excellent destinations where visitors can explore historic facilities, learn about the production process and sample locally made spirits. The compact nature of Puerto Rico mean that a wide selection of different rum experiences are all within easy driving distance of Villa Montaña Beach Resort. Here are some of the best places to begin your journey into the history of Puerto Rican rum.

1. Casa BACARDÍ, Cataño

Best for: First-time visitors and immersive rum experiences

Just across San Juan Bay, from Old San Juan, Casa BACARDÍ is one of Puerto Rico’s most famous visitor attractions and home to the world’s largest premium rum distillery. The expansive visitor centre combines brand history, rum-making insights and Caribbean hospitality.

Visitors can choose from guided heritage tours, premium rum tastings and mixology experiences. The Legacy Tour introduces the Bacardí family story and concludes with a guided tasting, while The Maestro’s Walk takes guests into a working aging warehouse to discover how oak barrels and the tropical climate influence the rum’s flavour. There is also a pavilion, cocktail bar and gift shop, making it easy to spend several hours here.

Its accessible location and varied experiences make Casa BACARDÍ an excellent introduction to Puerto Rican rum culture. During peak season there is a regular ferry which goes from Cataño Ferry Terminal, Old San Juan Pier 2,  and connects with a shuttle bus which goes directly to Casa BACARDÍ. Always check the official tour website in advance as the timetable for the ferries and buses changes periodically. The full trip takes just 20 minutes, making it a quick and convenient way to experience this famous rum tour from San Juan.

Advance booking is recommended, and organised tasting experiences are for adults aged 18 and over.

2. Ron del Barrilito, Hacienda Santa Ana, Bayamón

Best for: History lovers and premium, small-batch rum

Casa BACARDÍ is everything you would expect from a huge company that knows how to pt on a show. But for a more distinctly Puerto Rican experience, head to Hacienda Santa Ana in Bayamón, where Ron del Barrilito has been produced since 1880. This historic estate offers a glimpse into a more traditional style of rum-making, with an emphasis on craftsmanship, aging and consistency.

The visitor centre organises guided tours of the historic facilities, including aging rooms and the Fernández family home. Guests can learn about the brand’s distinctive production methods and the influence of sherry-seasoned Spanish oak barrels before enjoying a tasting.

Several experiences are available, including a Heritage Tour, a more extensive Tasting Tour and a hands-on Mixology Tour. The latter is particularly appealing to cocktail enthusiasts who want to learn how premium aged rum can be used in classic and contemporary drinks. The different experiences also incorporate different expressions of rum, and are priced accordingly: from affordable tours for families through to tours that incorporate some of the finest rums in the world, which are a little more expensive but perfect for a memorable visit as part of a special occasion such as an anniversary or honeymoon.

Located a short drive from San Juan, Hacienda Santa Ana combines historical atmosphere with a deeper appreciation of Puerto Rico’s rum-making traditions.

3. Destilería Coquí, Mayagüez

Best for: Discovering Puerto Rico’s craft rum scene

Located closer to Villa Montana, on Puerto Rico’s western coast, Destilería Coquí offers an opportunity to explore the island’s smaller-scale spirits industry. This family-owned artisan distillery produces locally made rum and other traditional spirits, bringing a distinctly Puerto Rican character to its visitor experience.

Its Coquí Plaza visitor centre welcomes guests for guided tours and tastings, providing an introduction to the distillery’s history, handcrafted products and approach to spirit-making. At around $45 per person (at the time of writing this article), the experience offers a more intimiate alternative to the larger, internationally recognised distilleries.

Mayagüez is one of the largest settlements on the west coast, known as “La Sultana del Oeste” (The Sultana of the West) and the “City of Pure Waters” so you can combine your rum tour with a visit to this thriving city, a great place to explore the main island’s west coast food and drink culture. Be sure to see Plaza Colón: The historic central square in Mayagüez, where you will find a large statue of Christopher Columbus surrounded by 16 unique bronze lamp posts depicting chambermaids. If you feel the need for some spiritual guidance, after consuming a different kind of spirit, Iglesia Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria is also worth visiting, the cathedral has an interesting history, with multiple reconstruction projects- of varied success-  after storms, earthquakes and political infighting.

Destileria Coquí is one of our favorite rum producers, check the official website for tour arrangements, current prices and opening hours before visiting. We also recommend checking the traffic, before you leave, it can be heavy on the roads heading into the Mayagües at peak hours.

4. PitoRico at La Destilería Craft Spirits, Jayuya

Best for: A taste of traditional Puerto Rican mountain culture

For something a little different, travel into Puerto Rico’s central mountains to Jayuya, home to PitoRico at Destilería Craft Spirits. Rather than focusing exclusively on conventional rum, this producer celebrates pitorro, a potent traditional sugarcane spirit with deep roots in Puerto Rican rural culture.

Historically associated with homemade distilling and family celebrations, pitorro is an important part of the island’s drinking heritage. Today, PitoRico offers a legal, commercially produced version in a variety of flavours, including coconut, passion fruit and tamarind.

Visitors can enjoy a distillery tour and guided tasting, discovering how this distinctive spirit is made and how traditional flavours are adapted for modern audiences. The mountain setting adds another dimension to the visit, offering a chance to experience a less familiar side of Puerto Rico. For those wanting a premium experience, a Master Distiller Experience is available and you can book private tasting sessions too, for special events.

Because visitor arrangements may vary, contact the distillery or check the website before making the journey and advance booking is recommended.

5. Destilería Capellán

Best for: An artisanal experience, close to Villa Montaña

Destilería Capellán is a craft rum distillery in Isabela, Puerto Rico, close to our hotel, focused on producing locally made spirits. It is part of Puerto Rico’s growing artisanal beverage scene, emphasizing small-batch production and a connection to the island’s rum-making heritage. The distillery is best known for its handcrafted spirits, which go beyond rum, including specialty small batches of products, depending on the season and the creative ideas of the team here. Most notably, Destilería Capellán is credited with producing the first single malt and single barrel whiskeys from Puerto Rico.

Many of the products produced here are unique and can’t be found widely outside of the distillery and the immediate area. Availability of tours, tastings, and operating hours can vary, as this is a far smaller operation than the major distillers, so checking ahead before visiting is recommended. Our hotel team can call ahead for you if you are interested in a visit.

6. San Juan Artisan Distillers

A longer drive east to Vega Alta, This is possibly my favorite rum distillery. Established in 2011, San Juan Artisan Distillers is the first and only Sugarcane Estate Distillery in Puerto Rico, it is a farm to bottle distillery and you can feel the love which goes into producing its award winning products. Here, the team grow, harvest, ferment and distill sugar cane juice from Puerto Rican heirloom varietals in their French Cognac Potstills. Their two signature rums are RON PEPÓN, an award-winning “Ron Agrícola” and TRESCLAVOS, a Ron Caña, inspired by Puerto Rican tradition, infused with locally farmed tropical fruits.

Tours include the sugarcane plantation, mill, aging area and distillery, followed by tastings and you need to book in advance through the website or an approved tour agent.

Planning your Puerto Rico rum tour

Each destination offers something different. Casa BACARDÍ is the natural choice for a comprehensive, visitor-friendly introduction, while Ron del Barrilito excels in history and premium aged rum. Destilería Coquí showcases the island’s growing artisan spirits scene, and Destilería Craft Spirits offers a fascinating insight into traditional mountain culture. Destilería Capellán delivers an experience that feels intimate and unique, a chance to sample products you probably won’t find elsewhere. Meanwhile San Juan Artisan Distillers allow you to experience the full sugar cane plantation to bottle experience, finished off with a tasting of some of the finest rums in Puerto Rico. We have only featured distilleries on the main island in this article but, if you are heading to Vieques, Crab Island Distillery is also highly recommended.

If you have time, we suggest combining one of the larger distilleries near San Juan, with their comprehensive visitor centers, with a contrasting visit to one of the smaller craft distilleries where you will find rums that express the heart and soul of their producers. Book tours ahead of time, confirm transport arrangements (driving after drinking is never recommended) and check any age restrictions for tastings. Most importantly, approach each visit as more than a chance to sample rum. These distilleries tell the story of Puerto Rico itself: its agricultural past, family traditions, creative spirit and enduring pride in a drink that has become part of its cultural identity.
