There is something appealing about a long weekend that does not require too much planning.
No complicated itinerary. No rushing from one end of the island to the other. Just enough time to switch off, explore somewhere new and still come home feeling as though you have actually had a break.
For that kind of trip, Isabela is hard to beat.
Set on Puerto Rico’s northwest coast, it combines long stretches of beach, good food, dramatic coastline and a much slower pace than some of the island’s busier destinations. It is also surprisingly easy to reach, particularly if you are flying into Rafael Hernández International Airport in Aguadilla.
Villa Montaña Beach Resort is around 15 minutes from the airport, which means your vacation can begin almost as soon as you land.
Here is how we would spend three days in Isabela.
After a flight, the last thing most people want is a long transfer followed by a packed afternoon of sightseeing.
One of the advantages of staying in Isabela is that you do not need to do very much on your first day.
Once you arrive at Villa Montaña, check in, unpack and head toward the beach.
The resort sits directly on the coast, so within minutes you can go from airport mode to bare feet, sea air and a much more relaxed frame of mind.
Depending on your arrival time, spend the afternoon by the pool, take a walk along the beach or simply find somewhere quiet to sit with a drink.
As the sun begins to drop, head to Eclipse for dinner.
Eclipse has long been one of the reasons people return to Villa Montaña. The setting is relaxed, but the food is anything but casual, with a focus on local ingredients, fresh seafood and Puerto Rican flavors.
It is the ideal first evening because you do not have to go anywhere.
Good food, a few drinks and the sound of the sea are usually more than enough after a day of traveling.
Your second day is the time to explore a little further.
Fortunately, some of the best places on this part of the island are only a short drive away.
Start with Jobos Beach.
Jobos is one of Isabela’s best-known beaches and is popular with both locals and visitors. Depending on conditions, it is a good place for surfing, swimming or simply watching the waves from the sand.
From there, continue along the coast.
Montones Beach is another easy stop and is well suited to anyone looking for calmer water and a more laid-back atmosphere.
You can also visit Pozo de Jacinto, a well-known natural landmark on the coastline close to Jobos. It does not take long to see, but the views are worth the detour.
One of the best things about this part of Puerto Rico is that you do not need to spend the whole day in the car.
There is plenty to see within a relatively small area, so you can explore in the morning and still be back at Villa Montaña by early afternoon.
That leaves plenty of time for the pool, the beach or one of the activities available around the resort.
Depending on what you enjoy, that might include cycling, snorkeling, horseback riding, diving or simply taking a long walk along the coast.
For dinner, you can either head back to Eclipse or explore one of the restaurants around Isabela and Aguadilla.
The important thing is not to over-plan the day.
This is not a part of Puerto Rico that needs a minute-by-minute itinerary.
On your final full day, head west toward Aguadilla.
Crash Boat Beach is one of the most photographed beaches in this part of Puerto Rico and is usually around 20 minutes from Villa Montaña.
The brightly colored pier and clear water make it an easy place to spend a morning.
Depending on the sea conditions, you can swim, snorkel or simply enjoy the beach before heading back toward Isabela.
If you have an evening flight, this also works particularly well on departure day because Aguadilla airport is nearby.
But if you still have the afternoon, we would recommend resisting the urge to squeeze in too much.
Head back to Villa Montaña and enjoy the last few hours properly.
Have lunch, take another walk along the beach, spend some time by the pool or sit somewhere quiet with a drink.
There is always a temptation on a short trip to make every hour count.
Sometimes the better option is to leave a little space.
A three-day trip works because Isabela gives you plenty of variety without requiring long journeys.
You have beaches, restaurants, coastal scenery and activities all within easy reach.
The airport is nearby.
And when you do not feel like exploring, you have everything you need at Villa Montaña.
That combination makes it particularly well suited to couples, families and anyone looking for a quick escape without the stress of organizing a complicated vacation.
You can do plenty.
Or you can do very little.
Both work equally well here.
If you are planning a long weekend in Puerto Rico, Isabela is a very good place to start.
